When you decide to rent an apartment, you are paying a certain amount of money, which was agreed upon ahead of time, to the landlord or property manager for the use of that property. It is technically owned by the landlord and it is their property, but it is your home. This can lead to some issues when it is time to determine whether a landlord is able to just walk into the  apartment at any time without notice.

You may not be the person who has the name on the deed to the property, but this does not mean that the landlord and any of their employees can just enter into the apartment unit anytime that they would like, without any kind of notice. Most states are going to have some rules in place where the property manager has to give you some sort of notice before entering the apartment and they will usually follow this and make sure you know the reason that they need to come in.

For example, if the landlord would like to do an inspection of the apartment or needs to come in for some routine maintenance, like changing out the air filters in the HVAC system, then they can give you a notice about it and then come in after that notice has been given. They are not allowed to just walk into the building and decide that is a good day for work and then come into your unit. They have to give you that notice since you are calling it your home and paying them to live there.

However, there are some exceptions to this. If there is an actual emergency, they are allowed to come into the apartment for. An example of this would be if the tenant below you has noticed water leaking down from the ceiling and the landlord can’t get ahold of you. They are allowed to enter into the apartment to see where the leak is coming from and to get the water turned off before it damages any more of the apartment. Most states outline very specific rules though for when the landlord can enter without proper notice.
