For the most part, as long as you take good care of the apartment you live in and do not mistreat it, you will be able to get the security deposit back. This is good news if you are about to move and would like to have a little extra money for cushion financially. But if you did not treat the apartment well, then you may be in trouble and run into a situation where the landlord is allowed to keep some or all of the deposit,  depending on how bad the situation is.

There are a few common situations where the landlord will be entitled to keep the deposit and use it to fix the issues that are found in the apartment. Some of these include:

# Property damage; If the tenant has gone through and created unnecessary damage to the apartment or other property that belongs to the landlord, and this damage is beyond what is considered normal wear and tear for how long the tenant lived there, then the landlord is allowed to use the security deposit to cover the repairs. This can include damage to the flooring, broken windows, holes in the walls and more.

# Extra cleaning: If you leave the apartment excessively dirty, the landlord can charge you to get it cleaned. A little light cleaning to get it done and ready for the next tenant doesn’t fit in here, but if the place is disgusting and they need dumpsters for it, then you will be charged.

# Unpaid rent; if you break your lease before the time is up or you abandon the rental, the landlord may be allowed to keep the deposit to help cover the costs of that unpaid rent as well.

# Other issues: If you violate some of the other terms of your lease and it puts the landlord in a financial burden, then you will lose some or all of your deposit as they work to fix it.
